Welcome to Reception class at Annesley! Our Early Years classroom is a warm, nurturing environment where children begin their exciting journey through school. Through engaging, play-based learning inside and outdoors, we build strong foundations in communication, relationships, and learning behaviours. Autumn 1:
Week 3 & 4 - All are welcome.
We have focussed our learning around the story All are Welcome, to celebrate differences and create our sense of belonging to our school community. We have continued our phonics work and have added the sounds p,n,m and d to our bank of sounds! We have worked so hard on our oral blending we are now beginning to sound out and blend CVC words. In maths we have been exploring patterns in our environment and also created our own repeating patterns!
Week 1&2 - The Colour Monster.
We have focussed our learning around the story The Colour Monster - to help us identify our feelings as we have started our school journey. We have also begun our phonics journey and have learnt the sounds s,a,t and i. We have also been working hard on our oral blending skills and hearing initial sounds in words. In maths, we have been exploring using language of size, weight, height and capacity to compare objects. We have also begun to explore our oracy text of The Three Little Pigs. We have enjoyed listening to the story and identifying which characters are in the story.
What We’re Learning This Term:
Communication and Language - We will be focussing on understanding how to listen carefully and why this is important. Develop social phrases, engage in story times and learn new vocabulary which we will use throughout the day. Our oracy story for this term is 'The Three Little Pigs' we will develop our story telling skills and look at the key elements within the story, diving into the characters, scene and key parts in the story.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development - We will be focussing on building relationships as we start school with both adults and peers. We will recognise our feelings and the feelings of others and why we may feel a certain way.
Physical Development - We will focus on our gross motor movements, developing our core strength in preparation for writing! We will also use big movements using language of direction to promote our pre-writing skills. We will begin to develop our fine motor strength to strengthen our fingers as we begin our writing journey!
Literacy - We will engage with lots of stories and story telling activities. We will also begin our journey into reading learning individual phonemes and begin to blend orally and begin to read CVC words and some tricky words!
Maths - We will start our journey looking at comparing objects using language of size, weight, capacity and height. We will explore patterns that we see in the environment and also create our own repeating patterns. We will begin our journey of number by gaining a deep understanding of numbers 1,2 and 3.
Understanding the World - We will be focussing on our own lives by talking about members of our family and describe people who are familiar. We will also look at images of familiar situations and dicuss their importance and significance.
Expressive Arts and Design - We will explore our creativity by making self-portraits and exploring art as a mean to express our feelings, likes and dislikes.

Reading
Reading is extremely important in EYFS. We encourage children to read at home at least four times a week. Each child receives two books: one decodable book for phonics, and a second chosen book for interest.
Reading diaries are checked weekly. Raffle tickets are awarded for consistent home reading and entered into a termly book prize draw.
We follow the Rocket Phonics scheme by Rising Stars. Children take part in daily phonics sessions and are assessed regularly to ensure they are progressing. Extra support is provided through Reading Squads three times a week.
P.E. and Swimming
PE takes place on Wednesday mornings.
Swimming takes place on Friday mornings. Children alternate swimming groups each week.
PE Kit: T-shirt, shorts, trainers or pumps. Long hair must be tied up and earrings removed.
Swimming: A full costume (girls) or trunks (boys) is required. Goggles may only be worn with a signed consent form. A rota will be displayed in the classroom window each week.
Snack
EYFS encourages healthy eating. Please ensure your child brings a healthy snack. No sugary snacks or drinks please.
