Actively Promoting British Values at Annesley Primary & Nursery School
The Department for Education has reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
In line with the Department for Education’s five-part definition, we promote the following British values at Annesley Primary and Nursery School:
-
Democracy
-
The rule of law
-
Individual liberty
-
Mutual respect
-
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

At Annesley Primary and Nursery School, students encounter these principles throughout everyday school life. In particular, our promotion of spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding is where these values are explicitly taught in a range of ways. Additionally, the values are taught in Religious Education and interwoven throughout our knowledge-led curriculum, giving children real and meaningful opportunities to explore them. We believe that actively promoting British values helps children develop a sense of community and understand their role and responsibilities within it.
We take every opportunity to promote British values through daily whole-school assemblies where a range of themes are explored. Our school systems and structures support this work, and we also challenge pupils, staff, or parents who express opinions contrary to fundamental British values, including extremist beliefs, in appropriate ways.
Democracy
Pupil voice is important at Annesley Primary and Nursery School. Our elected school council plays a key role in school life. Members are chosen by their classmates and work to make the school a better place. Pupil voice is also heard through conferencing and questionnaires. We believe this democratic process helps build a foundation for a deeper understanding of democracy in the future.
The Rule of Law
Our pupils encounter rules and laws throughout life. We help them understand that rules—whether in class, school, the local community or the country—exist for good reason and must be followed.
We reinforce this understanding through assemblies, classroom activities, and the wider curriculum. Involving pupils in creating school rules helps them understand their purpose and the consequences of breaking them. Through SMSC discussions and circle time, pupils debate and reflect on the importance of laws for their protection and that of others. We also welcome visits from members of the wider community including police officers, the Navy, war veterans, bank staff, and firefighters. These encounters provide real-life context and highlight the importance of the rule of law.
Individual Liberty
We create a positive and safe environment where pupils are encouraged to make choices and take ownership of their learning. Pupils have the freedom to choose from a variety of clubs based on their interests and skills.
Through activities like E-Safety days, children learn about their rights and personal freedoms and how to use them safely. Weekly circle times provide a supportive space for pupils to express their feelings. Valuing choice and freedom helps pupils appreciate individual liberty as they grow into adulthood.
Mutual Respect
Mutual respect is central to everything we do. Pupils learn to treat each other and staff with respect, which is evident throughout the school. Children share their work on class pages and offer respectful feedback to their peers. Each class agrees on rules or a class charter that sets the standard for respectful behaviour throughout the year.
Themed days and weeks promote an appreciation for differences and encourage pupils to treat everyone with respect.
Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
We follow the Nottinghamshire RE Agreed Syllabus, ensuring that all pupils learn about major world religions and develop respect and understanding for others’ beliefs, cultures, and traditions. Class assemblies and special events further deepen children’s awareness of festivals, beliefs, and customs.
Through our curriculum and daily routines, we strive to demonstrate tolerance and help pupils become thoughtful, informed citizens. We use current news and global events to support children in understanding different cultures and life around the world.
