Reading

Reading is key in Year 2 and affects all areas of learning. We focus on reading daily, especially comprehension. At home, please:

  • Read regularly and sign your child’s reading diary.

  • Ask who/what/where/when/why questions.

  • Encourage your child to recap after reading a few pages.

Regular home reading earns raffle tickets, and every half term names are drawn to win a book.

Rocket Phonics

We follow Rocket Phonics and use Rising Stars books. The programme ensures children learn to decode using the alphabetic code before frustration sets in.

  • Books are fully decodable up to turquoise level.

  • Children access online resources, pupil books and daily lessons.

  • Extra support is offered via Reading Squads three afternoons a week.

Spellings

We test spellings every two weeks. All children should learn List 1 and 2, with anything extra a bonus.
Examples from List 1: said, they, looked, so, all, called, he, are, would, she, my, could, me, her, should...
Other examples across lists:
people, because, Christmas, again, beautiful, everybody, parents, only, class, sure, busy, sugar, prove...
Keep practising regularly!

P.E.

P.E. is every Tuesday afternoon.

  • Bring kits on Monday and take home Friday.

  • Sessions are outdoors when dry, indoors otherwise.

Swimming

We swim every Friday morning with coaches Sarah and Kerry in our newly renovated pool.

  • Children work towards Swim England Duckling Awards.
