Parent Resources

To support families in navigating the fast-changing world of social media and online safety, we recommend the following websites:

These sites provide up-to-date information on social media platforms, privacy settings, and practical advice for keeping children safe online.

Privacy settings are especially important for protecting young users—please take time to explore them on the apps your child uses.

At School

As part of the curriculum and ICT learning, children are given supervised access to the internet. We believe the web and email are valuable tools in modern education. However, we are mindful of the risks and have put systems in place to ensure online safety:

  • Internet use is monitored and always supervised by teaching staff.

  • Our internet provider uses filtering systems to block access to inappropriate content.

  • At the start of every school year, all classes discuss how to stay safe online and explore the potential dangers of internet use.

Group Chats – Useful to Know

Many children take part in group chats on platforms such as WhatsApp, Snapchat, or Discord. While these can be fun and social, they can also lead to peer pressure, exclusion, or exposure to harmful content.

We encourage parents to stay informed about the apps their children are using and to maintain open conversations about group chat behaviour and expectations.

E-Safety

E-safety is an essential part of children’s education in today’s digital world and is embedded throughout their learning at school. We also aim to support parents and carers in developing their own understanding of e-safety, so they can help children use the internet and digital media safely and responsibly.

At Home

As a parent, you’ll know how important the internet is to your child. It’s a place for learning, playing, socialising, and self-expression. While it offers exciting opportunities, it can also present risks—such as online bullying, contact with strangers, and exposure to inappropriate or illegal content.

To help protect your child online and reduce these risks, you can:

  • Download a simple checklist to get started with online safety.

  • Have regular conversations about your child’s internet use.

Here are some conversation starter ideas (from www.childnet.com):

  • Ask your child to tell you about the websites they enjoy and what they like doing online.

  • Talk to them about how they stay safe online. What advice can they share with you? What do they think is OK or not OK to share?

  • Find out if they know where to go for help, how to use safety advice and privacy settings, and how to block or report inappropriate content.

  • Encourage them to support others—perhaps they can show you or a friend how to use something online safely.

  • Reflect on how your family uses the internet together. What could you do to make it safer and more enjoyable for everyone?
