SEND Information
Annesley Primary and Nursery School is a mainstream setting that caters for children aged 4–11 years.
We believe that high-quality teaching should be adapted and personalised to meet the individual needs of all children. Our SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Report outlines how we support pupils with additional needs and their families.
The report explains what to do if you have concerns about your child’s needs or if your child has a disability and may need additional support.
We make provision for a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, including:
-
Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
-
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
-
Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
-
Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
-
Sensory Impairments
-
Hearing Impairments
-
Dyslexia
We are an inclusive school and will make reasonable adjustments and provide staff training where needed to support children with other needs.
Our Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator (SENDCo) is Mrs Olliffe.
If you have any concerns about your child’s needs, you are welcome to arrange an appointment with Mrs Olliffe at any time. Please contact Mrs Fox or Mrs Collins in the school office on 01623 468806.
You can also access our school's Local Offer below. The Local Offer helps parents, carers and young people understand what services are available in the area and how to access them. Our SENDCo works closely with Nottinghamshire County Council service providers to keep information up to date.
Parent Partnership and Support
At Annesley, we use the Autism Education Trust (AET) to support our autistic pupils.
What is Autism?
-
Autism is not an illness. The AET describes it as a different way of being, not a deficiency or disorder.
-
Watch the Ambitious about Autism Youth Patrons explain what it’s really like to be autistic and how others can offer support.
-
How does it feel to have autism?
-
Through initiatives like the Operation Ouch autism awareness VR simulator, we help children understand how the world may be experienced differently by autistic individuals. This can involve overwhelming anxiety or sensory overload, and may result in meltdowns. Helping others understand this is key to building tolerance and empathy.

Cognition and Learning Needs
The SEN Code of Practice defines cognition and learning difficulties as challenges in learning at a slower pace than peers, even with differentiation. These include:
-
Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
-
Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) – affecting curriculum access, mobility, and communication
-
Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) – involving complex learning needs and often physical disabilities or sensory impairments
-
Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs (SEMH)
The SEN Code of Practice describes SEMH needs as difficulties that may show through withdrawal, isolation, challenging or distressing behaviour, and may reflect underlying mental health issues such as:
-
Anxiety or depression
-
Self-harm or eating disorders
-
Unexplained physical symptoms
-
ADHD, ADD, or attachment disorders
-
We use animations, discussion groups, and co-produced content to help children and families understand these conditions.
-
ADHD Support
-
Visit our ADHD section for access to a parent/child eBook co-created by people with ADHD. It aims to inform, support, and empower children with ADHD and their carers.
-
Physical Disability Awareness
-
We regularly promote inclusion through assemblies and resources that raise awareness of physical disabilities and how to foster respect and empathy.
-
Neurodevelopmental Behaviour Support (NBS)
-
NBS offers a Parent/Carer Support Group for families navigating behaviours linked to Autism and/or ADHD. No formal diagnosis is needed to attend. The group provides a safe, informal space with NBS staff available for advice and support.
