Spring 2

Spring 2 - 2019

Our topic for this half term will be: Who were the Egyptians?

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5

Where is Egypt and why do so many people enjoy going there?

Who were the Pharaohs and why were they very important? How can you create the wonder of the Pyramids? What is an archaeologist and how have they helped to recreate the past?  How have we learnt from the other Egyptians?

In Numeracy we will continue to practise and improve our knowledge of times tables. The children will develop their ability to solve problems with more than one step and to explain their reasoning. They will use a variety of different models to represent and support their calculations. They will focus upon learning to multiply and divide numbers and to count and order decimals. Our last topic will be time and we will learn to tell the time to within one minute and calculate time intervals using the 24 hour clock.

In Literacy we will be writing recounts and focusing upon organising our work into topic paragraphs. We will study the features of newspapers and magazine articles and write our own, linked to our Egyptian topic. In addition, we will continue to develop our knowledge of standard English and grammatical vocabulary. We will practise spelling patterns and the year 3 and 4 spelling lists, and will improve our spoken language through regular structured activities.

In Science, we will be learning about the importance of electricity. The children will learn to recognise if a circuit can function and how to use a range of components to turn switches, lights and buzzers on and off. They will discuss how to create a fair test and focus upon predicting what will happen and reaching a conclusion, using key vocabulary.

This term we will be looking at how religion can affect our daily lives.

We will begin by reading the book 'Something Else' to explore what it means to be different.

Over the following weeks we will investigate the following;

  • The importance of Easter to Christians
  • Why Passover is celebrated by Jews
  • The role of prayer in the Islamic faith
